DESTMA Repositioned for Effective Traffic Management in Delta State
The Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA) has been repositioned for more efficient and effective operational management. This was disclosed by the Director General, Hon. Benjamin Okiemute, during a press briefing held on Wednesday at the agency’s headquarters in Asaba to mark the one-year anniversary of the current executive leadership.
Hon. Okiemute highlighted the agency’s achievements within the past year, noting that DESTMA embarked on robust public awareness campaigns and sensitization programmes on road traffic rules and regulations. He said the agency had undergone significant restructuring aimed at strengthening staff performance and patrol operations.
According to him, DESTMA successfully repaired and maintained its patrol vehicles and tow trucks, and also established new units including the DESTMA Provost Unit, Intelligence Unit, and DESTMA Marshal Unit to enhance enforcement activities.
The DG revealed that a total of 4,328 vehicles were impounded across the state in 2025 for various traffic violations, with all cases adjudicated through mobile courts. He further disclosed that the agency generated ₦110,885,500 in revenue between December 4, 2024, and December 4, 2025—representing a 273 percent increase compared to the previous period.
Hon. Okiemute noted that the improved enforcement efforts of DESTMA officers contributed significantly to the free flow of traffic across the state, reducing man-hour losses and enhancing road safety. He attributed the decline in road accidents to the agency’s collaboration with other sister agencies.
He also stated that DESTMA participated in the staff audit ordered by the State Governor, aimed at identifying ghost workers and determining the actual workforce strength to inform future recruitment.
Additionally, the agency undertook maintenance of its physical structures, acquired new vehicles, and refurbished non-functional patrol vehicles across various zones—some of which previously had none.
Officers who distinguished themselves were recognised with awards, while efforts were made to improve their public outlook through better dressing standards, civility, and communication with citizens.
Hon. Okiemute appealed to the public for continued cooperation and urged residents to report complaints or concerns to 09052598510.
