Democracy Day: NOA Urges Nigerians to Uphold Democratic Values, Strengthen National Unity
By Gilbert Olie
As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day, the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, has called on Nigerians to reaffirm their commitment to democratic principles, active citizenship, national unity, and responsible participation in governance.
In a Democracy Day message, Issa-Onilu described June 12 as a historic symbol of the resilience, courage, and determination of Nigerians in their quest for democratic governance and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.
He noted that democracy remains the most inclusive and accountable system of government, providing citizens with the opportunity to freely choose their leaders, hold public officials accountable, and participate meaningfully in national affairs.
According to him, Democracy Day is not only an occasion to honour the heroes and heroines who sacrificed for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria but also a celebration of the enduring spirit of Nigerians who continue to uphold democratic ideals despite various challenges.
"Democracy gives every citizen a voice and offers the best platform for peaceful national development, social justice, and economic progress," he stated.
The NOA boss emphasized that democracy extends beyond periodic elections, stressing that it requires continuous citizen engagement, respect for the rule of law, tolerance of diverse opinions, civic responsibility, and commitment to the collective good.
He urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to reject misinformation, political violence, hate speech, and all actions capable of undermining national cohesion and democratic institutions.
Issa-Onilu reaffirmed the agency's commitment to strengthening democratic culture through sustained voter and civic education, public enlightenment campaigns, community engagement, and advocacy for responsible citizenship.
He also commended government institutions, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, religious leaders, the media, and development partners for their contributions to advancing democratic governance and promoting peaceful coexistence across the country.
The Director-General called on Nigerians to use the occasion of Democracy Day to renew their faith in the nation's democratic journey and work collectively towards building a more united, peaceful, and prosperous Nigeria.
The annual Democracy Day celebration, observed on June 12, serves as a reminder of Nigeria's democratic evolution and the collective responsibility of citizens to safeguard and strengthen the nation's democratic institutions.
