Soludo Pardons ‘Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki’ Three Weeks Before End of Jail Term
Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has granted a pardon to popular native doctor, Mr. Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as “Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki,” during a visit to the Amawbia Correctional Centre on Friday.
The pardon was granted under the Governor’s constitutional powers under the Prerogative of Mercy, bringing Nwangwu’s incarceration to an early end.
Nwangwu was convicted in February 2026 on charges relating to violations of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law and was sentenced to two years imprisonment following a plea bargain between him and the state.
His sentence was, however, due to expire in about three weeks before Governor Soludo intervened with the pardon.
The development has generated mixed reactions, particularly on social media, with some members of the public questioning the timing of the Governor’s decision, given that Nwangwu was already close to completing his sentence.
The debate has also been heightened by the recent sentencing of another popular native doctor, EkeHit, who was reportedly handed a six-year jail term by another court.
While some commentators have questioned the apparent contrast between the two cases, the circumstances, charges and judicial processes involved in each case are separate and should be considered independently.
The Governor’s decision has nevertheless renewed public discussion about the exercise of prerogative-of-mercy powers and the circumstances under which convicted persons may benefit from such interventions.
