The Delta State Government has commended residents for their high level of compliance during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise observed across the state, with restrictions placed on human and vehicular movement to enable residents to clean their surroundings.
The exercise was monitored by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Mr. Victor Chike Ogbugo, accompanied by the Deputy Director, Mr. Benedict Anaro and Assistant Director Ministry of Environment , who moved around to assess the level of compliance and participation by residents.
A mobile court was also stationed at Uzoigwe Primary School, Asaba, to prosecute environmental sanitation offenders in accordance with the state's environmental laws.
Speaking during the monitoring exercise, Ogbugo expressed satisfaction with the encouraging level of compliance, noting that many residents remained indoors to participate in the cleaning exercise.
He stressed that environmental sanitation should not be regarded as a monthly obligation alone but a daily responsibility that every resident must embrace.
According to him, the monthly exercise was introduced to promote environmental awareness and encourage residents to maintain a clean and healthy environment across the state.
He also commended volunteer groups for their active participation and contributions towards ensuring a cleaner Delta State.
Similarly, the Supervisor for Environment, Oshimili South Local Government Area, Mr. Sylvester Adim; Supervisory Councillor, Hon. Chibuzor Agwunwa; and President-General of Youth, Mr. Patrick Nwanosike, called on residents to make environmental cleanliness a priority.
They emphasized that a clean environment is essential to good health, as it helps prevent the spread of diseases, reduces the risk of illnesses and saves lives.
They further noted that the government had continued to mobilise resources and take necessary measures to maintain environmental cleanliness, urging residents to complement these efforts through active participation and cooperation.
They called on members of the public to sustain the culture of cleanliness beyond the monthly exercise, stressing that collective responsibility remains essential to achieving a healthier, safer and cleaner Delta State.
