World Teachers’ Day: NUT Honours Oborevwori, Six Others for Contributions to Education in Delta
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Delta State Wing, has honoured Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other prominent Deltans for their contributions to the development of education and the welfare of teachers in the state.
The awards were presented on Monday, October 5, 2026, during the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Cenotaph Ground, Asaba.
Speaking at the event, the NUT Delta State Chairman, Comrade Dickson Poubeni, expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government for creating an enabling environment for teachers to participate in the global celebration.
Poubeni said the World Teachers’ Day celebration, recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), was an opportunity to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of teachers to nation-building.
He particularly commended the Oborevwori administration for approving Salary Grade Level 17 progression for university graduate primary school teachers, describing the decision as a significant intervention that brought an end to the prolonged stagnation of affected teachers at SGL 14.
According to him, the development had brought renewed joy and encouragement to teachers in the primary school system.
The NUT chairman, speaking on behalf of Delta State teachers, announced that Governor Oborevwori and six other eminent Deltans had been nominated for awards in recognition of their contributions to education and their roles in achieving the SGL 17 career progression for university graduate primary school teachers in the state.
Among the award recipients listed were:
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori — Lifetime Achievement Award in Educational Development of Delta State.
Commissioner for Primary Education, Chief (Mrs.) Rose Ezewu — Merit Award in Educational Development of Delta State.
Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Nze Ashibogwu — Merit Award in Educational Development of Delta State.
Poubeni described the Governor's intervention on the salary-grade progression as a landmark achievement for teachers, noting that it had addressed an issue that had persisted under successive administrations.
He urged continued collaboration among government, teachers and other stakeholders to further improve the standard of education and enhance the welfare of teachers across Delta State.
The World Teachers’ Day celebration brought together government officials, education stakeholders, teachers and other dignitaries to recognise the critical role of teachers in shaping the future of society.
