Deltans have been warned to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in unauthorized places or face arrest and prosecution.
The Delta State Deputy Governor Sir. Monday Onyeme gave the warning while declaring open a sensitization campaign organized by the Capital Territory Development Agency, led by Chief Patrick Ukah in Asaba the state capital.
The sensitization campaign which took off from beside the Legislative Quarters through Nnebisi distributing flyers to traders and residents ended at Ogbeogonogo.
Sir. Onyeme advised residents to always obay the environmental laws and keep their environment clean to check the spread of diseases through indiscriminate dumping.
He said the best practices was to register with the Private Sector Participants PSPs and use waste bins for proper disposal of trash.
The Deputy Governor advised Deltans to plant trees and create more green spaces to check climate change.
Sir. Onyeme commended the leadership of the Capital Territory Development Agency for the initiative saying that it will go along way to educate people on the best way to take care of their environment.
The commissioner for Environment Mr. Ejiro Jamani said the ministry is fully in support of the Capital Territory Development Agency in achieving the best for the state.
He called on Deltans to join hands with the Capital Territory Development Agency and all Agencies in charge of environmental matters to keep the state clean as it was for their own good.
The Chairman of the Capital Territory Development Agency, Mr.Emmanuel Okoro, said the sensitization became necessary because the residents have continued to dump refuse indiscriminately , disobeying environmental laws.
He said it was a serious offense to dump refuse on the median strip, kerbs, undeveloped lands and drains as it will continue to constitute unhealthy environment.
The Director General Capital Territory Development Agency, chief. Patrick Ukah, said the sensitization was aimed at letting the people know that it will not be business as usual as they are out for serious business.
He told them to avoid littering the environment by consciously disposing of waste illegally as that would lead to arrest, prosecution and as well to prison.
Chief Ukah warned that illegal parking of vehicles that leads to traffic obstruction would attract punishment.
He said open defecation or urinating is an offense and will result to legal action .
The Director General, said the campaign will continue till the end of the year and after that enforcement will comence with mobile court put in place to prosecut offenders.
He revealed that the sanitary inspectors are to join force with the Capital Territory Development Agency in the enforcement and will be going from house to house to check sanitary situations in the environment and arrest offenders.
Chief Ukah told those who erected illegal structures along the roads or unauthorized places to remove them because if Taskforce come for the removal, the person will pay fine.
The Chairman of the Oshimili North Local Government Mr. Innocent Esewezie and the Chairman Oshimili South Local Government, Barr. Kelvin Ezenyili pledged their support for the initiative saying that when the environment is clean the people live heathy life.
They said they will continue to contribute to the workings of the Capital Territory Development Agency as it was for the good all.
Mr. Esewezie and Barr . Ezenyili appealed to Deltans to have a change of attitude towards generation, control and disposal of refuse in their houses.
