Delta Teachers Urged to Work as a Team for Educational Advancement
Teachers in Delta State have been urged to work collaboratively and give their best in order to fulfill their crucial role as foundation builders of society.
The State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, made this call during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration held in Asaba. Represented by the Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, the Governor described teachers as the builders of tomorrow and pledged that his administration would continue to prioritize their welfare.
He congratulated teachers on the peaceful celebration of the occasion and commended their contributions to state development, emphasizing that “without teachers, there would be no education.”
The National President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Audu Titus Amba, represented by Mr. Kenneth Ulumhenfoh, stressed the need to restore value to the teaching profession through sustained government investment.
He called on all levels of government to recruit more teachers and provide enhanced resources for teacher training, noting that the future of education depends on the quality and motivation of teachers.
Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, and Commissioner for Technical Education, Hon. Smart Ijeoma Ufoh, also congratulated teachers and encouraged them to take their profession seriously, as “they are the builders of tomorrow, and what they give to society will determine what the society becomes.”
Delta State NUT Chairman, Comrade Dickson Poubeni, commended the state government for its recognition and support of teachers. He described Governor Oborevwori’s teacher-friendly policies as commendable and praised the government’s efforts in teacher recruitment and timely promotions.
However, he raised concerns over lingering issues such as stagnation of graduate teachers in Primary school on level 14, non-inclusion of NUT in state education boards, teacher shortages, inadequate infrastructure, and insecurity in schools. He urged the government to urgently address these challenges to ensure effective teaching and learning.
Comrade Poubeni also celebrated the national recognition given to Governor Oborevwori, who received the Golden Award of Excellence for Education and Teacher Friendliness in Abuja. He expressed confidence that this honour would further motivate the Governor to do more for teachers.
This year’s celebration, themed “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,” underscored the need for synergy between government, NUT, and other stakeholders in transforming teaching into a truly respected and collaborative career.
The event was graced by academic leaders, civil society groups, media professionals, and other stakeholders. Dignitaries in attendance included Hon. Charles Emetulu, Member representing Ndokwa West Constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Education, Delta State House of Assembly, among others.
