The Delta State Waste Management Board has intensified its environmental sanitation drive with a large-scale clean-up exercise carried out on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, along the Old Lagos/Asaba Road in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area.
The operation commenced at Nuigbo Street, a known refuse-dumping hotspot where indiscriminate disposal of waste by residents and traders has posed serious environmental and public health concerns. Sanitation workers, supported by waste evacuation trucks and equipment, cleared heaps of refuse, desilted blocked drainage channels, and restored cleanliness to the area.
The exercise was carried out following a directive from the Executive Chairman of the Board, Hon. Matthew Mofe Edema, and was supervised on site by Hon. Cosmas Igbenije to ensure strict adherence to sanitation standards and operational efficiency.
Speaking on the intervention, Hon. Edema reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to sustaining a clean and healthy Delta State, stressing that environmental sanitation is a collective responsibility.
“Environmental cleanliness is not optional; it is a responsibility we owe our people. This clean-up exercise in Agbor is part of our proactive approach to maintaining a healthy environment and aligns with the vision of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for a safer and more livable Delta State,” he said.
He added that the Board would continue to respond decisively to sanitation challenges, especially in urban centres with high population density and commercial activities.
“We are taking waste management closer to the people. Towns like Agbor, with intense human and vehicular movement, require constant attention, and that is exactly what we are doing. Our response will remain swift and sustained,” Edema assured.
Also speaking during the exercise, Hon. Cosmas Igbenije described the operation as timely and critical, noting that Agbor’s status as a major commercial hub in the state makes environmental cleanliness non-negotiable.
“A clean environment is vital to public health and economic growth. This intervention is necessary to ensure that Agbor remains orderly, safe, and conducive for residents and businesses,” he stated.
The Delta State Waste Management Board therefore urged residents and traders to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse and to cooperate fully with sanitation authorities in keeping their environment clean and healthy.
