The Delta State Waste Management Board (DSWMB) has resumed its routine waste evacuation exercise across Asaba, the state capital, with renewed vigour, two weeks into the new year.
Field operations staff of the Board, led by Mrs. Evelyn Orisewezie, were on ground at Koka Junction, the flyover axes and other strategic locations along the Asaba–Benin Expressway, where they cleaned the environment and evacuated accumulated refuse into waste disposal trucks.
Speaking with journalists during the exercise, the member representing Delta North on the Board, Mr. Cosmas Igbinijie, said the operation was in line with the Board’s vision of ensuring a cleaner, healthier and safer environment for residents.
He stressed that the Board would continue to enforce zero tolerance for indiscriminate dumping of refuse, especially within the State Capital Territory.
Mr. Igbinijie commended the field operations staff for their dedication and commitment, noting that their efforts had helped to sustain regular waste evacuation and keep strategic locations in the capital city clean at all times.
He explained that the focus on the Koka Junction and flyover axes was due to the heavy human and vehicular traffic in the areas, which often leads to high volumes of waste generation.
According to him, it was important to prevent the surroundings of the flyover from being defaced by litter and illegal dumpsites, as this would create a negative impression of the state capital.
Mr. Igbinijie further noted that the Asaba–Benin Expressway serves as a major gateway into the capital city and must maintain a clean outlook at all times, adding that the Board would continue regular patrols along the Asaba end of the highway to evacuate illegally dumped refuse.
He also disclosed that partnerships established by the Hon. Mofe Edema-led Board with local government councils and security agencies would be strengthened in the new year to enhance efficiency and improve waste management operations across the state.
