The Delta State Government on Saturday, February 28, 2026, conducted its monthly environmental sanitation exercise across the state, with restrictions placed on human and vehicular movement.
Officials of the Delta State Ministry of Environment, led by the Functioning Permanent Secretary, Mr. Godwin Inone, in collaboration with the Oshimili South Local Government team headed by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Chinye Hobobo Uso, mobilized personnel and equipment to ensure full compliance. Mobile courts were stationed at strategic locations to prosecute defaulters.
In the state capital, Asaba, there was appreciable compliance, particularly along Okpanam Road, Nnebisi Road, and other major areas where residents adhered to the restriction order.
At FMC, Ibusa Junction, and other major intersections, task force teams mounted roadblocks to enforce environmental regulations.
Speaking during the exercise, Mr. Inone emphasized that environmental cleanliness is the responsibility of all Deltans, noting that government’s role is to sensitize and mobilize the public.
He warned that dirty environments attract diseases that could lead to death, stressing that it is better to comply with environmental laws and stay healthy than to end up in the hospital. He explained that the monthly sanitation exercise is designed to promote public health, especially during the rainy season when indiscriminate dumping of refuse can block drainage channels and cause flooding.
Mr. Inone further advised residents to take ownership of their environment by registering with Private Sector Participants (PSPs), procuring waste bins, and properly bagging their refuse for easy evacuation.
Also speaking, Hon. Chinye Hobobo Uso called on residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of waste in order to keep Delta State clean and prevent disease outbreaks. She urged the public to obey environmental laws not only for health reasons but also to enhance the beauty of the state, warning that violators would be prosecuted by the mobile court.
The Vice Chairman expressed concern that some residents still claim ignorance of the sanitation exercise, noting that it holds every last Saturday of the month. She added that environmental sanitation should be a daily practice in every household, not just a monthly obligation.
