The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Delta State Council, has called on the State Government to prioritize workers’ welfare, strengthen policy consultation, and accelerate industrialization for sustainable development.
This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held in Asaba on Wednesday, March 18, 2026. The communiqué was jointly signed by the State Chairman, Wilson Asekutu, and the Secretary, Henry Okocha.
The Congress commended the Delta State Government for its achievements in infrastructural development, particularly in road construction, urban renewal, and public facilities, noting that the projects reflect a strong commitment to modernization and growth.
While acknowledging these efforts, the Congress urged the government to place greater emphasis on workers’ welfare, stressing that workers remain the engine room of governance. It called for improved benefits and more conducive working conditions to boost productivity and morale.
The TUC also advocated structured and continuous consultation with organized labour in the formulation and implementation of policies affecting workers, stating that inclusive governance would promote industrial harmony and enhance policy effectiveness.
Furthermore, the Congress emphasized the need for a robust industrialization policy focused on job creation, investment attraction, and value-chain development. According to the Council, such measures are critical to reducing unemployment and stimulating economic growth in the State.
On social welfare, the TUC called for the provision of affordable housing schemes targeted at workers, noting that access to decent housing would significantly improve their quality of life and productivity.
The communiqué further urged the establishment of an efficient and subsidized mass transit system to ease transportation challenges, reduce commuting costs, and improve punctuality across sectors.
On retirement benefits, the TUC called for the implementation of the Federal Government’s gratuity payment system for retiring public servants, emphasizing that this would ensure fairness, equity, and financial security for retirees.
The Council also stressed the importance of proper placement and career progression within the civil service, urging the government to eliminate stagnation to enhance morale and service delivery.
Reaffirming its commitment to industrial peace, the TUC assured the Delta State Government of its continued support for policies that promote sustainable development. It added that the Congress remains a responsible partner in progress and will continue constructive engagement to advance the socio-economic well-being of the State.
