In an efforts to address the growing accommodation deficit in tertiary institutions across the country. The Federal Government of Nigeria approved to spend about ₦250 billion naira in 2026 for the construction of student's hostels across the country, as part of broader efforts to improve student's well-being and expand accessibility and affordable accomodations for students in various higher institutions for safer learning in the country.
The intervention will deliver thousands of new bed spaces for students through a mix of direct funding in public-private partnerships (PPP) which will be the largest single-year investment ever committed to student's hostels in the history of Nigeria.
This breakdown planned expenditure was revealed by the Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa. He also added that, the sum of N100 billion naira would be spent to build 500-bed hostels in roughly 50 universities of Nigeria at the cost of N2 billion each, while another component would fund 24 PPP hostels projects provision between 1,200 and 1,500 bed spaces per higher institution of the country.
Under the PPP model, the federal government will contribute N1 billion naira, while private investors will provide about N3 billion naira per project.
This initiative, will be funded through *Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund)*. the development will also support the expansion for the existing student's hostel facilities nationwide.
