The umbrella body of the Ndokwa ethnic nationality, the Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU), has adopted major resolutions aimed at strengthening the organisation and promoting the overall development of the Ndokwa people.
The resolutions were reached during the NNU General Assembly, comprising members of the executive committee, President-Generals and representatives of the various clans, held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Ndokwa House in Kwale.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, NNU President-General, Chief Amechi Asugwuni, said the assembly reaffirmed that the Ndokwa General Assembly remains the supreme decision-making body on matters affecting the Ndokwa nation.
He expressed satisfaction with the large turnout, noting that all clans were represented, describing it as a sign of unity and commitment to good governance. He added that the union would ensure the General Assembly is held regularly in line with its constitution.
Among the key resolutions, the assembly agreed that the three local government councils in Ndokwa land should jointly take responsibility for the maintenance, security and administrative running costs of Ndokwa House. According to Asugwuni, this would provide a structured funding system for the NNU and prevent incidents of theft and vandalism.
The union also resolved to collectively pursue the creation of Ndokwa East Constituency II. It agreed that the NNU leadership would engage political leaders, including the Deputy Governor, to secure funding for the ongoing court case until its conclusion, with updates to be presented to the General Assembly
On security, the assembly approved plans to organise a security summit in collaboration with the chairmen of the three local government councils. The summit is expected to develop a coordinated local security framework, after which its recommendations will be presented to the Delta State Government for support.
The NNU further resolved not to remain passive ahead of future elections. It said all candidates contesting elections in Ndokwa land would be invited to present their manifestos and development plans to the people, enabling the community to make informed democratic decisions.
Speaking on unity, Asugwuni stressed that the Ndokwa people must remain united, insisting that "Ndokwa" remains the accepted identity of the ethnic nationality.
He rejected attempts to alter the name, arguing that it has been used for over 50 years and changing it would create confusion for future generations. He also called for the correction of the federal constituency name to simply "Ndokwa Federal Constituency," describing the use of "Ndokwa/Ukwuani" as unnecessary and misleading.
On political accountability, the NNU President-General said the union would hold elected leaders accountable by strengthening grassroots participation. He noted that once the people are united behind resolutions reached by the General Assembly, political leaders would be compelled to listen and respond to the collective voice of the Ndokwa nation.
Asugwuni concluded by reaffirming that unity among the Ndokwa people is non-negotiable and remains the foundation for achieving the community's development goals.
