The Tortoise, the Elephant and the Other Animals
Long ago, when animals could speak like human beings, there lived an Elephant, a Lion, a Monkey, a Deer, a Hare and a Tortoise in a great forest.
The Elephant was the biggest and strongest of all the animals. Because of his strength, he often believed that nobody could challenge him.
One day, the animals gathered together to discuss how they could make life better in the forest. The Elephant stood up proudly and said:
“I am the strongest animal here. Whatever decision we make, I should be the leader.”
The Lion disagreed.
“You may be strong,” the Lion said, “but strength alone does not make a good leader.”
The other animals began arguing. The Monkey said intelligence was important. The Deer said kindness was important. The Hare said speed was important.
The Tortoise, who had been quietly listening, finally spoke.
“A good leader needs wisdom. Strength, speed and size are not enough.”
The Elephant laughed loudly.
“You? A tiny Tortoise? What wisdom can you possibly have that I do not have?”
The Tortoise did not become angry.
“Let us have a contest,” he replied. “The animal who proves to be the wisest should be respected by everyone.”
The Elephant agreed immediately.
The next morning, all the animals gathered near a large river. The Tortoise pointed to the other side.
“Let us see who can bring back the best food from across the river,” he said.
The Elephant entered the river confidently. Because of his enormous strength, he crossed quickly and returned carrying a huge branch filled with fruits.
The other animals praised him.
Then the Tortoise slowly entered the river. Everyone laughed because he moved so slowly.
But when he returned, he was carrying a small bag of seeds.
The Elephant laughed.
“Is that all you could bring?”
The Tortoise smiled.
“These seeds can produce food for many animals. Your fruits will finish in a few days, but these seeds can feed the forest for years.”
The animals became quiet.
The Tortoise then said:
“Strength is useful, but wisdom teaches us how to use strength properly.”
The Elephant realised that he had been too proud.
He lowered his head and said, “Tortoise, I have learned a lesson today. Being the biggest does not mean being the wisest.”
From that day, the animals began making decisions together. The Elephant used his strength to protect the forest, the Monkey used his intelligence to solve problems, the Deer helped the weaker animals, the Hare used his speed to carry messages, and the Tortoise offered wise advice.
The animals lived peacefully because they learned that every creature has something valuable to contribute.
Moral of the Story
Do not judge others by their size or appearance. Strength without wisdom can lead to foolishness, while wisdom can overcome great challenges.
Another important lesson: No animal—or human being—is good at everything. We become stronger when we respect one another and work together.
