The state commissioner for Transport, Chief Mike Okah has charged commercial Keke and motorcycle operators to obey the rules and regulations guiding their operations.
The commissioner who stated this while inaugurating the state Taskforce on Motorcycle and tricycle operators in the State said there was need for proper guidelines and procedures to ensure peace and security.
The commissioner who was represented by the permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs.Ngozi Nwanze said the state government was not unaware of the roles roles they play in the transport industry and the contributions to the finances of the state.
Chief Okah advised the Taskforce to ensure that every member put on their vest with identity card and a code on their tricycle or motorcycle for easy identification and security.
He told them to avoid all areas that have been restricted for their operations, especially the Expressway, parts of GRA among others saying that who violate the law would be sanctioned.
The state president of the Keke and motorcycle operators Chief.Obi Nzete expressed gratitude to the state government for giving them the opportunity to operate saying that they will continue to respect and honour the privilege.
He called on the Taskforce to operate according to the laid down tenets as no one would be speared if they go against the law.
Chief Nzete urged members of the Taskforce not to see their position as an opportunity to make money adding that they were to regulate and enforce the laied down rules for the benefit of members and the public.
He told them to go back to their respective local Governments and educate their people as the leaders would be held responsible if anything went wrong.
The president thanked Governor Okawa for creating the enabling environment for them to operate saying that they will not disappointe him.
Chief Nzete told them that henceforth Tricycle operators would end daily operations at 8pm while Motorcycle would close at 7pm saying that any violation would attract sanctions.
