The state commissioner for Environment, chief Godspower Asiuhwu has inaugurated the West Africa Coastal Area WACA,Technical Management Resource management committee in Asaba.
Inaugurating the committee, the commissioner said it has become necessary to inaugurate the committee in order to reduce the risk of coastal degradation, improve coastal resources management and improve the livelihood and social welfare of coastal communities as well as promote climate resilient integrated coastal management in the state.
Chief Asiuwhu said the programme in the state which was earlier established in 2018 with its expression of interest in 2019 but later restrained as a result of the outbreak of COVID 19 and the state renewed it’s interest to participate in the program.
According to the Commissioner the program which had representative from the various Ministries and Departmental Agencies MDAs,would be implemented in eight coastal states of the country.
He said it was expected that the stakeholders in the programme provide information that would help in developing a Multi-Sector Investment Plan that would address coastal flooding, erosion and pollution in the state.
The commissioner added that it would help implement sustainable and climate resilient strategies to reduce coastal risks and achieve economic and environmental benefits
The Chairman Waste Management Board, Mr Chinye Bazim urged members of the committee to be committed to the course by put all their best in their duties.
Mr.Bazim commended the efforts of the ministry and state government for embracing and the implementation of the WACA, programme.
The Chairman WACA, Dr. Minnie Oseji, promised to work very hard to ensure that the terms of reference to their duties.
The focal person, WACA,Mrs Judith Onokurhefe prayed God to give members of Committee the grace to discharge their duties.
