The state government has called on Deltans to refrain from indiscriminate dumping of refuse inside drainages, Canals, Rivers and undeveloped lands as it will negatively affect residents and destroy their properties.
The Commissioner for Environment chief Godspower Asiuhwu gave the advice when he went on inspection of the ongoing desilting of the Orogodo River in Ika North and South Local government areas.
The commissioner said Government is to intervene but it was the responsibility of the residents to protect their Environment because they are to bear the consequences of the negative effects.
He said the state government decided to support the people by mobilizing the swamp Boggi and men to ensure that innocent people dose not suffer the evil of some recalcitrant persons in society.
Chief Asiuhwu warned that henceforth, anyone caught dumping refuse indiscriminately no matter the position of the person would be arrested and prosecuted.
Some of the Ika leaders and fish farmers including, Daniel Usifoh and Mr.Youduba Curtes,who led the commissioner round the affected areas including fish farms and home flooded by the effects of the blocked Orogodo River, said that many of their fish farms were lost to the flood.
They said the problem had been the indiscriminate dumping of refuse inside drainages Canals and Rivers which had blocked the water ways.
Usifoh and Curtes expressed gratitude to the commissioner and state Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for quick intervention stressing that it will go a long way to reduce their suffering.
They appealed to the commissioner to mobilise more equipments in order to meet up the challenges because the damage was enomoues.
The leaders promised to work with the ministry to achieve the best results in order to avert future occurrence.
The commissioner went round the fish farms affected to ascertain the level of damage.
