Sheriff inauguration
Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori, Speaker of the State House of Assembly has been sworn in as the fifth executive governor of Delta State .
Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori flanked by his wife,Mrs Tobore Oborevwori subscribed to the relevant oath of office as governor as administered by the State Chief Judge, Justice Theresa Diai at exactly 11:49am before the mamoth crowd at the Stephen Keshi International Stadium, Asaba.
Earlier,Sir Monday Onyeme flanked by his wife,Mrs Catherine Onyeme swore to the oath of the office of Deputy Governor at 11:31am amidst cheers from the crowd.
Honourable Oborevwori was elected to the State House of Assembly to represent Okpe Constituency in 2015 and was elected as Speaker on May 11,2017 following the impeachment of Honourable Monday Igbuya.
He was re elected in 2019 and also re elected as Speaker of the 7th Assembly thereby making him the longest serving speaker of the state legislature.
The Deputy Governor,Sir Monday Onyeme was the Chairman of the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue from 2015 to 2023.
The swearing in of Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori and Sir Monday Onyeme followed the victory of the People's Democratic Party at the March 18,2023 governorship election where the PDP polled 360,234 votes.
The newly sworn in governor, Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori performed his first official assignment with taking of the salute and inspection of guard mounted by men of the Nigeria Police .
The inauguration ceremony attracted dignitaries including the immediate past Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa and his wife,Dame , Edith Okowa,former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan and his wife ,Mrs Roli Uduaghan,members of the National and State Assemblies, traditional rulers, religious leaders,top government functionaries among others .
In his inaugural address, Governor Oborevwori said he had accepted the responsibility to serve as governor with a resolve to do more to advance the state to new heights in leadership and socio economic development.
He noted that as the longest serving Speaker,he had learnt the importance of setting priorities of government,communicating goals and outcome of policies and programmes hence was well positioned to deliver good governance to Deltans.
Governor Oborevwori promised to take Delta to greater heights in line with his MORE Agenda of Meaningful Development, Opportunities for all, Realistic Reforms and Enhanced Peace and Security adding that he would complete all ongoing projects embarked upon by his predecessors.
The governor affirmed that Warri ,being the commercial nerve centre of the state would be given special attention under his administration adding that with the establishment of the Warri Uvwie and Envrions Development Agency,the template had been set to give Warri and Envrions a face lift,while the rehabilitation work on the Warri City Stadium would be expedited .
On agriculture, Honourable Oborevwori said his administration would develop agricultural value chain and enhance the development of agro industrial parks given their potential to create wealth , reduce unemployment, improved security and food security.
The governor siad his administration would take immediate steps to make the export processing zones for Koko and Kwale fully functional to attract more investors to the zones and would create an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive while also promising to enhance social investment programmes for the benefit of the poor and vulnerable including widows and people living with disabilities through micro credit,training and business networking.
Honourable Oborevwori said the existing entrepreneurship development programmes would be sustained and expanded to encourage the creation of more small scale industries to create more jobs and reduce crime and other social vices .
On the civil service, Honourable Oborevwori said priority would be given to boast it efficiency and service delivery in addition to merit as the yardstick for elevation into top management positions and would give necessary support to the judiciary to enable it carry out its functions without hitch .
He acknowledged the roles played by former governors of the state in terms of development promising to build on the foundations already laid .
Earlier, immediate past governor,Senator Ifeanyi Okowa after taking the last salute as governor thanked Deltans for the support to his eight administration stressing that he was handing over to a worthy successor who would continue the good works of development.
Some Deltans who spoke said they believe in the ability of Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori to deliver the dividend of democracy to the people.
