Delta State Records Low Compliance During October Environmental Sanitation Exercise

The Delta State monthly Environmental Sanitation exercise was observed on Saturday, 25th October 2025, across the state, with restrictions placed on human and vehicular movement.

The State Ministry of Environment team, led by the Functioning Permanent Secretary, Mr. Godwin Enone, in collaboration with the Oshimili South Local Government team headed by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Ify Ogbogu, mobilized personnel and equipment to ensure compliance. A mobile court was stationed at Uzoigwe Primary School, Asaba, to prosecute sanitation defaulters.

At the state capital, Asaba, monitoring revealed low compliance, particularly along Okpanam Road, Nnebisi Road, and other major parts of the city, where movement restrictions were largely ignored.

However, at FMC, Ibusa Junction, and other key intersections, task force teams mounted roadblocks to enforce environmental laws.

The Functioning Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Enone, emphasized that cleanliness is the responsibility of all Deltans, noting that the government’s role is to sensitize and mobilize the public. He warned that dirty environments attract diseases that could lead to hospital admissions, urging residents to comply with environmental laws to stay healthy.

According to him, the monthly sanitation exercise was designed to promote the good health of residents, particularly during the rainy season when indiscriminate dumping of refuse can block water channels and cause flooding.

Mr. Inone advised residents to take ownership of their surroundings by registering with the Private Sector Participants (PSPs) and procuring waste bins, as well as bagging their refuse for easy evacuation.

He further called on the public to desist from indiscriminate dumping of waste in order to maintain a clean and healthy environment.

The Permanent Secretary also reminded residents that adherence to environmental laws enhances both public health and the aesthetic beauty of Delta State, warning that violators would face prosecution by the mobile court
