The Delta State monthly sanitation exercise was held on Saturday,January 31, 2026, across the state, with restrictions placed on human and vehicular movement.
The State Ministry of Environment monitoring team, led by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr.Jamani Ejiro,was in Sapele to sensitise residents and enforce environmental regulations.
In Oshimili South Local Government Area, the Vice Chairman, Hon. Ify Ogbogu, led a team of officials and equipment to ensure strict compliance with sanitation laws.
Observations showed encouraging levels of compliance along Okpanam Road and in many parts of the state capital, as residents largely adhered to the restriction of movement.
Major junctions, including the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) and Ibusa Junction, were barricaded by various environmental taskforces to enforce the exercise.
Speaking with journalists,a Director in the State Environmental Taskforce, Mrs. Nkechi Amaraegbu, stressed that cleanliness is everybody’s responsibility, noting that the government’s role is mainly to sensitize and mobilise the people.
She explained that a dirty environment attracts diseases which could result in hospitalisation, adding that compliance with environmental laws is essential for healthy living.
According to her, the monthly sanitation exercise is for the overall benefit of Deltans, as it promotes good health and a cleaner environment.
Mrs. Amaraegbu further warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, saying it could block drainage systems and water channels, leading to flooding and other environmental hazards.
She advised traders, eateries, and residents to patronise approved Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for waste disposal instead of using cart pushers and wheelbarrow operators who often dump refuse at unauthorised locations.
The Director charged members of the public to obey environmental laws not only for health reasons but also to enhance the beauty of the state, stressing that anyone who violates environmental regulations would face the full weight of the law.
