Residents across Delta State on Saturday, April 25, 2026, participated in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, as authorities enforced the restriction of human and vehicular movement to ensure full compliance.
The exercise, coordinated by the State Ministry of Environment, saw monitoring and enforcement teams deployed to strategic locations across the state.
Leading the state team was the Functioning Permanent Secretary, Mr. Godwin Inone, while the Oshimili South Local Government contingent was headed by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Chinye Hobobo Uso.
To strengthen enforcement, mobile courts were stationed at key points to prosecute defaulters, while taskforce personnel mounted roadblocks at major intersections, including FMC and Ibusa Junction.
In the state capital, Asaba, there was a noticeable level of compliance, particularly along major routes such as Okpanam Road, Nnebisi Road, and the busy Ogbeogonogo Market axis. Movement restrictions were largely observed, with many residents seen cleaning their surroundings and clearing waste.
Speaking during the exercise, Mr. Inone emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is a collective responsibility.
He noted that while the government continues to create awareness and provide structure, residents must take ownership of sanitation practices.
He warned that unclean environments serve as breeding grounds for diseases, which could result in severe health consequences, including loss of life.
According to him, adherence to sanitation laws is a preventive step toward avoiding unnecessary hospital visits.
Highlighting the importance of the sanitation exercise,he explained that the monthly sanitation initiative is particularly critical during the rainy season, when improper waste disposal can clog drainage systems and trigger flooding.
Mr. Inone further urged residents to register with Private Sector Participants (PSPs) responsible for waste collection, procure appropriate waste bins, and properly bag refuse to facilitate efficient evacuation.
Also addressing residents, Hon. Chinye Hobobo Uso called for an end to indiscriminate waste disposal, stressing that environmental cleanliness is essential not only for public health but also for the aesthetic appeal of the state.
She cautioned that violators of environmental laws would be prosecuted by the mobile courts, adding that ignorance of the sanitation schedule is no longer acceptable, as the exercise holds on the last Saturday of every month.
Hon. Uso further encouraged residents to go beyond the monthly exercise by maintaining daily sanitation practices within their homes and communities.
The April sanitation exercise reflects the state government’s sustained efforts to instill environmental discipline and promote healthier living conditions across Delta State.
