Practicing Journalists in Delta State have been charged to work as a team in the pursuit of their professional duties
The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Delta State Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, gave the charge on Sunday when he and the Vice Chairman of the state chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Mrs Florence Nwabuonwu, hanged out with colleagues at the Press Centre in commemoration of their birth anniversaries.
Comrade Oyowe said there was need to work as a team which was necessary for professional colleagues from different media organisations to build friendships, exchange ideas and discuss common challenges of the journalism practice with a view to growing the profession.
He spoke against running one another down over monetary issues, especially on the social media, stressing that it was high time Journalists priced themselves high before the public in order to command respect as watchdogs of the society.
The State NUJ Chairman called on members of the Union to imbibed the culture of celebrating one another on auspicious occasions, emphasizing that they should not focus only on promoting and celebrating others while abandoning their own whenever there was cause for celebration.
For her part, Mrs Florence Nwabuonwu, an Assistant Chief Information Officer in the State Ministry of Information, thanked members of the Union for their comradeship in celebrating with them,saying that it was a mark of honour and respect.
The Secretary of the State Council, Comrade Victor Sorokwu, congratulated the celebrants on their birth anniversaries and corroborated the Chairman’s views on the ignominious attitude of public officials towards some Journalists ln the state, which he blamed on the concerned Journalists themselves, stressing that practitioners must conduct themselves responsibly in the line of duty.
Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Community Newspapers, Prince Orhomonokpaye, commended the leadership of the State NUJ for the hang out initiative, and urged Journalists in the state to continue to support Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to succeed.
