The State Chairman, Waste Management Board,Mr.Mufe Edema has called on Deltans to refrain from illegal dumping or face serious sanctions.
Mr.Edema gave the advice when he led staff of waste management and Private Sector Participants,PSPs,on sensitization to mark the world Environment Day,with a theme,Beat Plastic Pollution, highlighting the urgent need to address plastic pollution's devastating impact on ecosystems, human health, and climate change.
He explained that illegal dumping had done serious damage to human life, saying that it was time every citizen of Nigeria have in mind that plastic products are not compatible to human life.
Mr.Edema called on residents of Delta State to register with the PSPs for proper disposal of their waste, saying that plastic products could be money making if they collect and selle to recycling companies.
He said waste management is not a duty for Government alone but everybody's duty in order to live in a clean and disease free environment.
While commending the PSPs for their efforts, the waste management Board Chairman warned that any unperforming PSP would be showered the way out of business.
The Chairman, Private Sector Participants,PSPs, Asaba, Comrade Samson Osuere, explained that their work was to evacuate waste and it was the responsibility of residents to parkage their waste properly for easy evacuation.
He encouraged residents to always obey the rules and regulations of environmental laws in order to remain healthy and free from hospital bills.
Comrade Osuere explained that environmental laws stipulates that residents should take charge of their environment, but noted that it was unfortunate that some of the residents failed to comply with the laws as they ignored the directives from government.
The Chapter Chairman, Nigeria Institute of Environmental Engineers,Comrade Johnson Ogana, called on residents to join hands with the relevant agencies in charge of waste management to keep the State clean.
He nated that indiscriminate dumping of refuse on drains, especially plastic bottles results in blockage of drains and water ways.
He commended waste management for their efforts in participating in 2025 World Environment Day saying that it will go along way to sensitize the public.
