PSP PROTEST UNAVAILABILITY OF ACCESS ROAD TO DUMPSITE IN ASABA
The Private Sector Participation (PSP) yesterday embarked on peaceful protest over non maintenance of the existing dumpsite and expansion of the site which was filled up with waste generated from the capital city.
The protest which was led by the Chairman of Association of Waste Managers, Pastor Samson Osuere disclosed that Delta State Waste Management Board in collaboration with the state Ministry of Environment have failed to provide solution on the provision of access road to the dumpsite.
Pastor Osuere said that the PSPs have no other option to address the challenges and could not find a better place to dump waste evacuated from the capital city, stressing that the existing dumpsite is used by two local government area, oshimili south and oshimili north local government area.
He further disclosed that their trucks have dilapidated because the loaded waste have not been disposed for the past five days, adding that the dumpsite host community (Ibusa) have been terrorizing the PSPs and asking them to stop making use of the area.
He said that the community came with thugs to stop PSP from dumping waste in the site, stressing that the PSP have engaged dialogue with parent bodies but to no avail.
The Chairman said the body kept promising them that something would be done but nothing was happening.
Earlier, the Commissioner for environment Hon. Ejiro Jamani appealed to the protesters that his office was working seriously to ameliorate their plight, finding ways to create another dumpsite and to provide access road to the site.
Hon. Jamani frowned at the action of the PSP driving trucks loaded with waste to block the state Post primary Education Board office complex, stressing that the government is not sleeping over the matter and have involved the chairman of Oshimili north who booked a meeting between the government and the host community to discuss the way forward.
He said that the government is looking for another site, and have directed waste management board to engage the services of a bulldozer to push waste inside the site because there is more space behind the site.
The commissioner also commended the PSPs for effective Service delivery, promising that the Ministry is working hard to ensure that they provide enabling environment for the cleaning of the capital city, while the access raod is between the community and the government.
Hon.Jamani assured the PSPs that his administration will ensure that a new site would be provided, and have checked the Ugbolu Community to see if there could be space of land where they can sell or lease for the purpose of dumping waste generated from the capital city.
