The monthly environmental sanitation exercise took place on Saturday across Delta State with restriction of vehicular and human movements during the exercise, except those on essential duties.

In Asaba and it's environs, residents were seen cutting down over grown weeds and desilting their drains in front of their compounds.

The sanitation monitored by the State Commissioner for Environment, Mr Jamani Ejiro and the Oshimili South Local Government Chairman,Dr.Kelvin Ezenyili visited, Ogbeogonogo market, Ibusa Road, Summit road and Inta-Bau among other areas where members of State Environmental Taskforce and Local Government Taskforce blocked the major roads to enforce compliance.

It was also observed that the Oshimili South Local Government mobilized labourers to clean up  Ogbeogonogo market.

In an interview the state Commissioner for Environment Mr Jamani Ejiro said it was necessary to keep the Environment clean as cleanliness starts from self.

He said Asaba is relatively clean but stressed the need for people to always participate in the monthly sanitation exercise in order to avoid the spread of avoidable diseases.

The Commissioner adviced residents and those operating Hotels to avoid discharging sewage into public drains as well register with the private Sector participants PSPs, and refrain from indiscriminate dumping.

The Chairman,Oshimili South Local Government,Dr.Kelvin Ezenyili said indiscriminate dumping of refuse can result in the blockage of drains which could lead to flooding.

The Chairman said residents who do not always comply with the sanitation laws would be arrested and prosecuted, adding that the Taskforce was out for those who failed to comply.

Dr.Ezenyili advised residents who are not receiving the services of the PSPs to report to the council for proper action, saying that any PSP that fails to do his job would be changed.

He appreciated residents who complied and advised those who failed to comply to have a change of attitude as the sanitation exercise was for their own benefits.
