The monthly environmental sanitation exercise took place today across Delta State with restriction of vehicular and human movements during the exercise, except those on essential duties.
In Asaba and it's environs, residents were seen cutting down over grown weeds and desilting their drains in front of their compounds while the Government provided trucks to evacuate the accumulated refuse.
The sanitation monitored by the Director General Capital Territory Development Agency,Chief Patrick Ukah, Ministry of Environment,WAste management Board,State Chairman Environmental Taskforce,Chief Godspower Asiuwhu and the Oshimili South Local Government staff visited,Ogbeogonogo market, Ibusa Road, Summit road,Okpanam Town and Koka junction among other areas where members of State Environmental Taskforce Capital Territory and Local Government Taskforce blocked the major roads to enforce compliance.
In an interview the Director General Capital Territory Development Agency, Chief Patrick Ukah said it was necessary to keep the Environment clean as cleanliness starts from self.
He stressed the need for people to always participate in the monthly sanitation exercise in order to avoid the spread of avoidable diseases
Chief Ukah advised residents to desist from discharging their refuse into public drains as well register with the private Sector participants PSPs, and refrain from indiscriminate dumping.
The Director General Capital Territory said indiscriminate dumping of refuse can result in the blockage of drains which could lead to flooding.
The State Chairman Environmental Taskforce, Chief Godspower Asiuwhu who also visited Oko market said the traders who do not always comply with the sanitation laws would be arrested and prosecuted,adding that the Taskforce was out for those who failed to comply.
Chief Asiuwhu who was accompanied by the manager Admissions State Taskforce,Madam Nkechi Amaraegbu advised traders to ensure they desilt the drains in front of their shops stressing that Taskforce will visit the market from Monday and if they failed to comply they would be prosecuted.
He appreciated residents who complied in clearing their drains along Ibusa Road and other areas advised those who failed to comply to have a change of attitude as the sanitation exercise was for their own benefit
The total number of persons arraigned before mobile Court are, 214,total number convicted and fined 132,total number convicted and commuted to community service 20,total number discharged 44 while number cautioned as minors and released after the exercise 18.
