As the strike embarked upon by the  Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) since February 14 this year lingers on, a data entry staff member of the University of Benin, one Carter Oshodin, has allegedly committed suicide over financial constraints occasioned by the strike, which also involves non academic staff unions in the Universities.

Part of the deceased’s problem was said to be his inability to offset piled up debts, including his daughter’s school fees, and attempts to get some neighbours and friends to help were said to have hit the rock.

To him, there was no hope in sight in view of the Federal Government’s policy of no work no pay, which the striking lectures and non academic staff had been told would apply.

The spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, Chidi Nwanbuzor, confirmed the incident, but added that the case had yet to be officially reported.
