The Delta State Government has embarked on a robust and far-reaching operation aimed at demolising illegal structures and removing heavy-duty vehicles loitering on the state’s major expressways.
This action underscores the administration’s unyielding commitment to maintaining environmental sustainability, public safety, and compliance with the law.
Leading the enforcement operation, Chief Godspower Asiuwhu, Chairman of the Delta State Taskforce on Environment, mobilized environmental marshals to execute the demolition and evacuation of unauthorized structures and vehicles that have defaced the state’s urban landscape.
This comprehensive operation, which spanned multiple locations, targets individuals and organizations that have persistently violated environmental laws despite repeated warnings from the government.
According to Chief Asiuwhu, the affected property owners and vehicle operators had been served with a five-month notice to vacate or regularize their operations within the parameters of the law.
However, many failed to heed these warnings, leaving the state government with no option but to carry out the demolition and evacuations.
“The Delta State Government is not interested in taking such drastic steps, but when people continue to flout the law and disregard the safety and beauty of our environment, we have no choice but to enforce the law,” Chief Asiuwhu stated.
He further cautioned citizens and business operators against erecting illegal structures or abandoning heavy-duty vehicles on expressways, noting that such actions not only deface the state’s landscape but also pose significant risks to public safety and the environment.
Chief Asiuwhu reiterated Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s zero-tolerance policy on environmental violations, stressing that the administration would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that Delta State remains clean, orderly, and conducive for all residents and businesses.
He emphasized the importance of sustaining the progress made in environmental cleanliness across the state, pointing out that the government has invested significant resources in sanitation, environmental sustainability programs, and infrastructural development to enhance the quality of life for residents.
Addressing the Press, Chief Asiuwhu also appealed to residents and stakeholders to cooperate with the government by complying with environmental regulations, emphasizing that a cleaner and safer environment is the collective responsibility of all.
He warned that the taskforce would intensify its operations in the coming weeks, with a clear mandate to ensure that violators of environmental laws are dealt with decisively.
“The era of lawlessness is over in Delta State. We are fully committed to maintaining a zero-tolerance stance on illegal structures and environmental infractions, and this will be sustained for the benefit of all Deltans,” he concluded.
The demolition exercise is part of the state government’s broader strategy to implement the MORE Agenda, which focuses on maintaining a healthy environment, improving infrastructure, and enhancing public safety.
The taskforce, alongside other relevant government agencies, will continue to monitor and enforce compliance with environmental laws, ensuring that Delta State retains its status as one of the cleanest and most orderly states in the federation.
