The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, has achieved a groundbreaking feat with the successful correction of complex congenital malformations in two pediatric patients. The surgeries, performed by a multi-disciplinary team led by renowned pediatric surgeon Professor Emmanuel Ameh, were overseen by the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Victor Osiatuma, who emphasized the significance of this achievement in boosting confidence in local healthcare services.
One of the procedures involved a seven-year-old girl who had lived with a temporary colostomy for seven years due to financial constraints. Intervention by Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and Delta State's First Lady, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, facilitated the long-awaited surgery. The complex procedure, which lasted over 11 hours, reconstructed a functional anal structure and addressed related complications. In a separate case, a one-year-old baby underwent a 14-hour operation to correct a similar condition.
Representing the Delta State First Lady, Mrs. Alicia Okobi commended the medical team for their exceptional work, describing the achievement as a testament to the potential of Nigerian healthcare when adequately supported. She assured the hospital of continued support from the state government to strengthen healthcare delivery.
