Appointment Of PS : Uzum Calls For Equity, Fairness In Delta Civil Service

By JOHNSON EBIGIDE

Eugene Azuka Uzum has enjoined Delta State Government to continue to embrace professionalism, equity and fairness in the appointments of Permanent Secretaries (PS) in the state civil service.

Uzum, a lawyer, policy consultant and an advocate of youth development, stated this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, the federal capital.

He said that with the modernisation of the civil service in Nigeria through the reviews of the various extant rules in the service over the years, it had become necessary to ensure that the very fibre sustaining the service was not destroyed.

He maintained that steady career progression, seniority, equity and fairness should be considered in appointments of PS  to serve as the chief accounting officers in the various ministries and other extra-ministerial departments of the state government.

He frowned at possible political considerations in such  appointments, saying that not only would such an unwholesome development destroy the beauty of seniority in the service, but may result in imbalances of PS in the respective local government areas of the state.

Uzum said that the office of a permanent secretary in the civil service is so critical that efforts should be geared towards shielding it from corruptive collaboration with the political class to swindle the state, just as he averred that cutting corners to assume the office would create bad blood among civil servants in the state.
